I couldn't get a hold of a car to borrow nor did anyone (namely my brother) want to wake up early to drive me to Mel's house. Mel is so awesome...she offered to pick me up from my uncle's home in Henderson...totally out of her way and in the opposite direction of where we were headed.
The morning was great...skies were clear and blue, the sun was shining, and it wasn't too terribly cold for late fall.
We made a quick stop at the at the visitor center to get trail maps. We chat with ranger on duty. Mel joked if there were a missing persons report for 2 Asian women, just look for her prison inmate orange outfit...man it sure was blindingly bright! LOL!
After 2 photo stops at Calico Hills parking 1 & 2, we cruised the 13 mile scenic loop and parked the car at Sandstone Quarry. The Sandstone Quarry parking lot is the trailhead for Turtlehead peak and Calico Tanks. We verged right on the trail to get to Calico Tanks.
Since we had an early start, the early stages of our trek was shaded by the Calico Hills. The trail wound along a dry stream bed, at least I think it was a stream bed.
Apparently, the Calico Tanks Trail continues upward shortly after the sandstone staircase...oh well...gives me another reason to return to Red Rock and hike the whole trail over again.
