Information for Motor Tourists

Ukraine has the right-side traffic, the speed limit in built-up areas is 60 km/h, in some places it is 40 and 30 km/h; on intercity roads — 90 km/h; on highways — 110 km/h. No content of alcohol in the driver’s blood is allowed, and traffic service inspectors control that severely, making drivers pass alcohol tests.

Children under 12 years of age should be transported only on the back seat. Passengers must fasten safety belts.

It is necessary to point out some special things about parking. Parking lots in the downtown area are chargeable. Those where you can leave your car for a long time are specified with P signs. There is free parking near big supermarkets, some restaurants, hotels. Besides, for a short time, you can leave your car in the street, if it does not interfere with the traffic, and where there are no prohibiting sings. At night it is better to leave the car at a chargeable secured parking lot, of which there are enough in all city districts. It is advisable not to leave any things inside the car.

If you violated traffic rules, a State Auto Inspection officer will make a record and submit it to the local court, where the case will be heard according to the Ukrainian law.

If you get into a traffic accident, you should first find out whether anyone is injured and call an ambulance if necessary. You should also call the State Auto Inspection officers. Before they arrive, try to keep the accident scene as it was and never leave the accident sight before they arrive. If you rented the car, you should fill in a special form for the insurance company.

Gas stations

There are many gas stations of different companies in the city, and most of them work 24 hours. You pay by the liter. There are much fewer stations with gaseous fuel.
