Dubai
J had a flight to Dubai and asked if I wanted to go with him. A few days in the desert after a long winter ? You bet. While waiting at the gate to preboard, I met the wife of the captain and we hit it off pretty well.
After checking in, the four of us decided to go into town and visit the souks (traditional Arabic markets) and get a bite to eat. When we arrived at the gold souks, I realised that I should have brought sunglasses. I had never seen so much gold in one place. You could get dizzy walking around there, but it was incredibly fun.
Upon returning to the hotel, we were informed that for security purposes, we were going to another hotel in Sharjah. The US was planning on attacking Iraq and the crew hotel was located next to the US Embassy.
The cabin crew were already packed and in the lobby. Only they were heading to the airport to fly back to Amsterdam with that evening's returning flight. The following flight wouldn't be until next week.It was pretty late when we finally checked in, so sleeping in and a late breakfast it was. We were advised not to leave the hotel grounds so we spent the day on the beach and the evening on the tennis court. After dinner, again informed that we were back to another hotel in Dubai thus closer to the airport, just in case. In case of what ?
You can imagine our surprise when the van pulled up in front of our hotel. Out one window was the 'sail' and the other the 'breaking wave'. We were staying at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel. All I thought was WOW. That evening we enjoyed the light show of the Burj Al Arab (the sail) from our balcony. Talk about sleeping in luxury.
