Grindelwald and Piz Gloria
August 4, 2007
The next morning it was back to the train station. This time with the local system-BOB (BernerOberlandBahn)....destination Grindelwald. What a CHARMING little town at the foot of the very impressive Eiger peak ! All I could think about was "I can't wait to hike THAT !" To my pleasant surprise, J had reservered a room at the Hotel Belvedere so that we could enjoy the impressive sight everyday. After checking in, we dropped the suitcases in the room and headed right back to the train station. Since it was after noon, we decided to do alittle sight seeing by train and have a bite to eat at Piz Gloria, which claims to be the world's first revolving restaurant and was the film location of the James Bond 'On Her Majesty's Sercret Service'. If you're afraid of heights.
..the journey up would NOT amuse you. The train can only go so far, then it's about 30minutes in a cable car to the Schilthorn summit. But at 2970 meters, the view is spectacular !!! The glaciers that are below the restaurant are covered with white plastic sheets in the hope of slowing the melting process. Unfortunately you can't stop physics. We ended up sitting in the restaurant for the full rotation (an hour) before heading back down. As we were leaving, invited guests, in tuxes and gowns, were arriving for the '007' dinner. If we had only known...
Back at the hotel, guests were greeted with a welcome drink by the owners and invited to enjoy the last daylight hours on the terrace before dinner. But first a shower and change of clothes.
