Attempt #1
March 9, 2008
So there we were, hanging out on the island of Oahu with nothing to do. Well sort of. Essentially my friend Ray and I wanted a little adventure which led us to the Haiku Stairs. I have heard some great stories about this hike but the closest I had ever been was viewing them from the H3. With that said I really wanted to hike the stairs before I left the islands.
On the day of the hike we started out early. After hiking up a road we encountered the trailhead of the stairs. What an awesome sight!! It almost looked like they were going into the sky. What we didn't take into account however was the impact it would take on our legs. I consider myself in descent shape but I was in for one hell of a workout. The grade of the steps goes from almost flat to nearly vertical where you have to pull your self up as you go. A good comparison would be a workout on a stair-master for and hour, on the highest setting.
As we approached the half way mark we were forced to turn around. Unfortunately this was well short of our intended destination of the summit.
While we didn't win the battle on this occasion we surely will win the war in the end. Until next time... attempt #2 will come soon.
