Walking the walk, and smoking other people’s cigarettes.

It was a cloudy day, which reflected on the water and made it look uninviting. Like ink. The absence of sun did not deter Opatija’s holiday makers… all people, young and old, covered Opatija’s “beaches” (ugly concrete slabs near the water), hopeful for the sun that was to come later in the afternoon. We observed that this town is very popular with super-tan senior citizens and families with screaming young children.
Because we were walking through busy areas on a narrow path, we frequently had the opportunity to breath other people’s cigarette smoke as they walked by us, puffing away. Wonderful. Hear me rant for just one second: HOLY CRAP, WHAT IS WITH ALL THE SMOKING?!! Even outside on a “nature path,” it is impossible to escape. The restaurants do not offer designated non-smoking areas. When we picked up our car, the rental agents were all smoking like crazy in their booths at the airport. It’s like we’ve time traveled to the 1970s. Have they heard about lung cancer? Can I have one breath of fresh, unpolluted air here, please?! Can I have one meal out without being engulfed in second hand smoke!? Gheez.
OK, done ranting, back to our day. After our long walk, we spent a lot of time doing nothing back in the room.
We finally headed out in the evening, to the city of Rijeka. Our goal was to go to the shopping mall there…maybe we can get some good deals. Although Steve has nearly none of the clothes he left home with, I have almost ALL the same clothes and I am sick to death of them.
The mall was kind of a bust. Number One: they allow smoking in the mall, of course. Although it’s in designated areas, there’s a designated area every two feet or so, and as I mentioned, everyone smokes, so you just can’t escape it. It was awful. Number Two: we got there at 8:15pm, and they closed at 9pm. Not enough time to do much of anything. We looked around in some stores quickly, then we went to the grocery store for supplies, then drove home and just had a picnic dinner on our balcony. (There was no smoke there, BTW. :^)
