Dinner in Croatia
You would think that driving from Slovenia to Italy and back through Slovenia to Croatia would take a long time. Days, perhaps. But, no. We left Slovenia right after breakfast, did all that other stuff, and arrived here in Croatia well in time for dinner. Things are pretty compact in this part of the world. We could have probably slipped Austria into the schedule with no real difficulty.
We are staying in the town of Opatija, in the Kvarner region of Croatia. To be honest, Opatija was not my first, second, or even third choice for this leg of the trip. I had hoped to stay somewhere in Istria, but I booked too late and everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) was full.
When we arrived at Hotel Mozart, the clerk said there was a small problem with the booking, which was made and paid through Expedia. The reservation was made for a single occupant, but since we have two people, I must pay another 94 euros (about $150). Ummm, yeah right. NO. I have already paid a high price of $220 per night, and my reservation printout clearly says it's for "two adults." I explained that they won't be getting extra money from me. This went back and forth a while ...all friendly, but they were clearly as determined to collect the money as I was to keep it. I spoke with the manager, I spoke with Expedia. I am feeling very stubborn about this.
We left it unresolved for the time being, and went for a walk and to find dinner. We wanted nothing very fancy...a quick meal would do. There were lots of places with enormous menus catering specifically to tourists. We settled on a simple place called American Pizza, because they had so many people eating there and it was cheap. Steve has a not-very-American pizza and I had a tuna sandwich the size of a basket ball. Thus completing our goal of three meals eaten in the different countries today. A job well done, if I do say so myself.
