The Himalayas are out there somewhere, I know it. (photos added)

I guess the civil engineer was on vacation when this one went up!

We were welcomed to Sikkim by a large gate and several military personnel. Sikkim is a border state (bordering Nepal, China, Tibet, and Bhutan) and a permit is required to enter here. We had obtained our permit back in Kalimpong via a courier who brought our passports and application to some office somewhere. We presented this and were entered into the computer, and then we were free to go in.

Fodor’s said that “the Himalayas are constantly in view beyond the Rangeet River” on this particular route, but we didn’t get so much as a glimpse of them. Clouds and fog completed obscured the view. Although conditions were less than ideal, the 3-1/2 hour drive was still picturesque, and we did stop for a couple photos on the way.

Our hotel, The Elgin Mt. Pandim, is very similar in style to our last place. It was most recently a government-run hotel, taken over and renovated by Elgin Hotels about 18 months ago.  They did a great job in the reception area, but the rooms seem slapped together. At least the furniture in our room is bigger (we can actually use the chairs) and the bed is comfortable. Plus we think there is a nice view beyond the fog. It is pouring rain now, and we are wishing against all odds for it to clear tomorrow for our visit of the area.

Yes, he was a real pain, that driver. I can't get my computer on the Internet here, but when I can I will post my new blogs about India and our wonderful driver...
