Homer, Alaska - View is breathtaking

8.8.08 Homer

After booking the ferry yesterday while in Anchorage and high-fiving ourselves, we drove a gorgeous road to Homer!  Incredibly beautiful!

And then, to make things even better, we are now parked in the most beautiful spot on earth.  Really!  You would not believe how pretty it is!

We are camping on Homer Spit (a small strip of land at the tip of the Kenai Peninsula) on a beach overlooking the Cook Inlet, with a view of a mountain range and several volcanoes, one of which is spouting smoke.  Fortunately, it is far away on the horizon.  The water is sparking blue and the mountains snow capped.  A float plane just flew over.  This is a Homer City “campground” with a $15 self-pay box and facilities in 2 locations nearby.  It is a million dollar view!

We’re resting here for a few days- will bike up to the historic section of town and down to the end of the spit.  We saw the ferry there last night.  It is very crowded at the very end and not overly attractive, but we want to see the fishing hole.  Maybe this is the place to catch that fish for dinner!

Relaxing and enjoying Alaska’s playground on the Kenai Peninsula!

p.s.  We’ve driven over 9,000 miles so far!
