Fox going through Denali

Our 8-hour shuttle bus ride into Denali today took us through beautiful mountains where we saw a fox, a wolf, two moose, and some caribou.  I was amazed at how far away people could spot animals:  Sheep that were mere specks of white on the mountain caused great jubilation, the stopping of the bus, and the eager downing of windows for better viewing with binoculars.  I think 300 yards is about the distant viewing limit - if you cannot decipher an animal’s features with your binoculars then it just doesn’t count in the game of Wildlife Bingo.

I wish I could say that the trip was fun, with perfect weather, and we were sad when it ended, but the cold, rainy conditions made it less than ideal.  I was grateful not to drive the rather treacherous road and the bus (which was very cold inside) did smooth out the potholes, so that was a bonus.

The kids did really well on the trip- three people came up to me at different times to say how nice they were- and I felt bad that only Jazy had brought a book along.

At the only rest stop with books, we ran in and chose some for the rest of us.

I got, read, and finished a terrific book, “Two Old Women” that had to do with an Athabascan Indian tribe in Arctic Alaska.  Wonderful!

Charles is reading “Minus 148” about a mountain climber of Mt. McKinley.  Charles also got some mosquito fact book, which he finds fascinating, revealing such facts as how long it would take a mosquito to drain all the blood out of your body.  Lovely!

Lia’s book is “Dogsong” about an Alaskan boy and the teacher behind us on the bus noted his approval.

Because of the rain, fog, and mud that collected faster than we could squeegee off, visibility was limited and there was no chance for seeing Mt. McKinley.  While we were grateful for the Denali experience, we were admittedly relieved to return to hot Chicken & Dumplin’ soup in the RV afterward.  Ahhhh.

I’m convinced that I could live just about anywhere if the people around me were kind, but could be unhappy in the most luxurious place if they were not.  I guess I’m very attuned to other people’s hearts and affected by their actions.  That can be a blessing or a curse.

The trip today provided more material for our “RV 2:  We’re Living It!” movie script.  J  Type-A wildlife spotters’ competition, bus driver antics, and travel one-upsmanship tourist rally, etc.  Got to have a sense of humor sometimes!

We're going to try to see the dog-sled activity at the park tomorrow, as well as revisit the Visitor's Center to explore their museum and see their movie on the Park.  Rumor has it that the weather is scheduled to improve.  Hooray!
