On the road to Canyonlands "El Middle of Del Nowhere!"

Well, I didn’t sleep very well last night in the BLM Horsethief Campground.  Being in the middle of nowhere felt very vulnerable.  I ran through a list in my head of my “weapons” or lack thereof, how long it would take the police to get to us if our cell phones worked (which they didn’t), and then I worried about how I was going to handle the “camping” in Central America.  None of this is prudent for deep and restful sleeping!

Of course, nothing happened and our dear cowboy friends probably thought we were nuts parking so close to them last night.  I realized this morning that we were much closer than it had looked in the dark!  Heehee!

We were just a few minutes from Canyonlands NP gates and were there early.

We’ve got our National Park system worked out now.

Here's what we do at the Entrance and Visitor's Center:

  • Show the annual pass at the entrance booth (take picture of Ranger)
  • Get the folding map and park newspaper and review them
  • Look at the interactive displays at the Visitor’s Center
  • Watch the movie at the Visitor's Center
  • Buy the postcard in the gift shop for our photo album
  • Get our National Parks "passport" stamped
  • Plan our “must see’s” course of action
  • Review our plan with the Ranger and get their advice and input
  • Start!- Drive to the furthest point to begin - hit all the overlooks and extra hikes as time, energy & heat allow

By noon we’d seen all the Ranger’s “must see’s” and more - it was HOT and there were so many swarms of gnats that the kids wore their Alaska head nets.

On the road to Canyonlands "El Middle of Del Nowhere!"
We did a lot of hiking out to see the amazing canyons which were immense- they reminded us of the Grand Canyon and were on both sides of the highway.  It was a very interesting and amazing National Park.  I'm so grateful that these National lands are protected for the future!  http://www.nps.gov/cany/ and http://www.utah.com/nationalparks/canyonlands.htm

I took pictures at one overlook that would make your heart stop as a mother and I was grateful the kids didn’t get out of the RV.  There was absolutely no guardrail and the 12’ of sloping downhill slippery sandy just ended over the cliff edge.  I’m sure there are many accidents at that site!  Have you heard about the most popular book at the Grand Canyon:  “Over the Edge:  Death at the Grand Canyon” which is a sick and fascinating book on what not to do there?  Well, there could probably be a whole book written about this one overlook at Canyonlands! (This is sad:  http://www.sltrib.com/news/ci_9650727  I'm betting that was the site- I have to find my map- it was one of the first overlooks from the Visitor's Center)

We're off to Colorado!

Well, Tessa, my computer illiterate self finally was able to figure out how to write to you. I have been reading of your adventures. Wow. Sounds so fantastic. Remember we will be in Banff July 24 I think. I think you will be past that point, but if not, let me know. Have tons of fun. Mary

Hi Tessa! It is so fun reading your updates :-)
Are you feeling at all cramped in Ciao Baby? I have always wanted a LD mid bath for our family of four to do just what you are doing but the burning question is always...is it big enough? We have a fiver we use that stays pretty much in one spot and would use the LD for excursions. Looking forward to your thoughts!
