Day 9:
We woke up, packed, and checked out. Today was the day that we left Tokyo and ventured to other parts of Japan. We first went to Ueno station to eat breakfast (was craving american food) and ate at the Hard Rock Cafe. We then went back to Minami-Senju to drop off our stuff in a large box they call a hotel room, only took what we needed. I'm not sure if this was a wise decision, but we had fairly large luggage and didn't know where to leave it, so we got a room for a week at the hotel we first stayed at (check Day 1 journal/review) and left our stuff there. We then went to harajuku to hang out and pass the time while we waited for our train. There was a HUGE Ayumi Hamusaki (sp?) event at the stadium, there were hour long lines just to buy merchandise and food (Ayumi Hamusaki is a very big japanese pop music star.) We just walked around a little, ate at subway, which by the way, subway is actually pretty good in Japan, they have some interesting menu items, like herb dogs. We then traveled to Tokyo station, waited about 45 minutes for the Shinkansen ("Bullet Train") and left for Kyoto! The trip was about 2 hours and 20 minutes, not bad at all, alex watched a movie on his laptop, i listened to music on my zune and kinda dozed off for a little. The subway in Kyoto is pretty confusing, not as tourist friendly as the subway in Tokyo. They also use different cards, so our suica/pasmo cards were useless. The hotel that we booked, hotel Rhino, called us to make sure we were coming since it was fairly late already, and we told them we didn't really know how to get there, they explained it to us fairly well and it was on the same block as the subway exit they told us to get off at, so it was easy to find. On the 1 block walk to the hotel, we found a Mister Donut (Japan's biggest donut shop), Mos Burger (a decent Japanese burger chain), an arcade, and a bar. We walked into the hotel, checked in, it had amazing rooms (read the review!), we dropped off our stuff, walked a few steps to the mos burger, then walked a few steps to "Kam's Bar" (also read the review!), Kyoto, so far, other than the subway, ROCKS! We were lovin it.
