Tonight was the night... We woke up kinda early, went to Kinkakiji, Ryoanji, and then Fushimi-Inari. Kinkakiji was a bit plain and disappointing, Ryoanji was just weird, Fushimi-Inari was just plain AMAZING though... that could be just because I'm a huge Torii fan (if anyone knows where I can get a large Torii (at least a foot tall) for cheap, let me know!). We then met up with some friends at our hotel, went to eat, then Gion (the Geisha district). We went inside the temple and then got booze at Lawson... We then stood in a long long line to get into the temple. Spent New Year's in line drinking... KUNPIE! (cheers in japanese). We then got into the temple and went to the bar by our hotel. It was a fairly small bar and about 15 japanese people in it and then there were 7 of us americans in there.
We started out with some drinks, and then some of the japanese kids challenged us to darts. But instead of the losers buying the winners drinks, the losers buy themselves drinks... we were a bit baffled but more than buzzed and went along with it... They totally kicked our asses, we didn't even stand a chance. So we drank, but they were nice enough to drink with us! It was so ridiculous hanging out with them, the bartenders were drinking with us too and eventually one of the japanese guys there and a bartender got so drunk they started flashing their genitalia and stripping and so on, it was quite possibly one of the most entertaining/fun nights ever. Turns out one of the bartenders also worked at the hotel we were staying at and told us he could get us a discount on breakfast.
He called his boss and we think he might of gotten in trouble for trying to hook us up, but he really insisted. So the bar closed at 7, 7:30am breakfast started and we had what he said was the traditional new year breakfast, which included a shot of some alcohol (i was too drunk to remember at that point). We were all super drunk and when he brought us the shots, we all looked at him like he was crazy, but he kept saying "its tradition, its tradition", so we did it. it was awful. After breakfast, it was already 9AM and we all just went upstairs and crashed. It wasn't until the next morning that I pulled the receipt from the night before out of my pocket and realized the bartender totally mischarged us, our tab came to about $130 (american USD) when it should have been closer to $300! We were drinking there for like 5 hours! We weren't sure if the bartender was just too drunk and messed up, or he liked us THAT much...

Awesome Non-touristy Bar!
So there are a few of these around Kyoto, we only went to two of them. One of them was right outside of the Saiin Station off the Arashiyama Line. Thi… read entire review
