Outside our bungalow for Mike's bday
Our Koh Lanta
experience started with an early morning boat ride from Krabi
. After a bit of a false start with a two hour wait at our hotel and Mike telling the reception people "No, no not same, same," over and over - those of you that have been to Thailand will know what I am talking about, we were off. What cracks me up is, as usual, we get off the overpacked tuk tuk and the driver says to us, "Quick, quick, you will miss the boat," as if that was our falt!! But anyway we arrived in Koh Lanta in one piece. It is truely a beautiful island and my advice is if you want to go get there fast cause there are parts of this paradise that are untouched by the tourism bug at the moment! As we got off the ferry we could here lots of calling and yelling, "Oh they're going to sing to us," I thought - you can tell I have spent a bit of time in Fiji! This is not the way it is done in Thailand "You want tuk tuk, you want hotel??" So much for a welcoming committee!! Anyway one of the drivers stuck to us like glue and we eventually negotiated a price to our bungalows.
The cave we swam through, awesome!!!
Unfortunately on the way there the heavens opened and Mike and the driver had to put down to makeshift sides to this motorbike with side car! To add to the joy the road to where we were staying was red dust (sort of like you see in the Australian outback) and it was VERY steep - I thought they were going to have to come and peel us off the bottom of the hill. But as usual these drivers are used to it and when we got to the bottom he was even gentlemanly enough to ask for an umbrella for me! We stayed at Sayang Beach bungalows, which was awesome!! Lovely staff - run by a Muslim family and the Thai-Muslims have the best sense of humour! During our stay we went for an outing to four islands including one in Trang
which was lovely.
We snorkelled and visited a cave, which we swam through to a beautiful beach on the other side. We met more friends - Steve and Melinda from Melbourne who helped us celebrate Mike's birthday with a cake I got at a "French" bakery. We also went for a scooter ride at Mike's request for his birthday and he went to the kickboxing which he loved. All and all we had a great time. Koh Lanta is an awesome place!!
