Mt. Sinai and Sharm el Sheikh

I spent 5 months living, breathing, eating and dreaming ancient Egypt. I visited everything from the Great Pyramids to the remote and desolate tombs of Tell-el Amarna to the awe-inspiring statues of Ramses II at Abu Simbel. Here are my stories and adventures - the good the bad and the archaeological.

Mt. Sinai and Sharm el Sheikh

- Visited the Monastery of St. Catherine.  What's to see: a room filled with the skulls of former monks, THE burning bush (or at least a shrub that grows REALLY REALLY well in the desert), and a well where Moses drank.
- The Monks "back in the day" were illiterate and burned the ancient scrolls to stay warm during the winter.  A scholar from Britain, during his visit to St. Catherine's Monastery, was horrified by this practice; so, he swiped some of the scrolls and smuggled them to Britain.  Now you can view them in the British Library's Museum.
- Climbed Mt. Sinai at midnight to watch the sun rise. 3,750 steps on the way down.
- Snorkled in Sharm el Sheikh.
