The Serenity of the Marlborough Sounds
All of these photos are of the Queen Charlotte Sounds. The Interisland ferry arrives at the Tory Channel and cruises up the queen Charlotte Sound to Picton about 5 times a day. The InerIsland Ferry travels between Picton in the South Island and Wellington in the North Island.
There are thousands of small bays and inlets within the Sounds. Most of the native bush has long gone; burnt off to allow farming years ago. Now days not a lot of farming is done and alot of the hillsides are reverting to native plants again. The farming that is done is Mussel Farms, hundreds of black plastic mussel bouys dot the Sounds, from these hang long ropes that mussels attach to and grow in the pristine clean fresh waters, and are regularily harvested and sold to provide Green Lip Mussels that the Marlborough Sounds are famous for. Bird life is also increasing along with the bush. There are also King Shags, birds that are found no where else but in the sounds, these nest on rocky out crops at the end of the Sounds.
Fishing is not so good as it used to be, but still one can catch a blue cod of good size if one tries hard enough and is patient.
The best way to enjoy these peaceful sheltered waters is in a small boat just drifting along listening to the lovely bell birds song coming across the water. Almost heaven. You relax and enjoy the peace and serenity and feel refreshed.
Enjoy.
