Omagh Travel Blog › entry 1 of 1 › view all entries

Based on, and possibly part funded by the wealthy US-based, Mellon family, this park traces the Ulster - North American links through the catholic irish, Ulster scots and dissenting traditions. Well worth a look in. Near Omagh in Co. Tyrone.

Ulster - American Folk Park

The famous jaunting car

The Ulster American Folk Park is an open-air museum in Co Tyrone, Northern Ireland a few miles north of Omagh. The museum tells the story of emigration from Ulster to America in the 18th & 19th centuries and provides visitors with a "living history" experience on its outdoor site. Costumed demonstrators go about their everyday tasks in the traditional manner in authentically furnished Old and New World buildings.

The Ship and Dockside Gallery features a full-size reconstruction of an early 19th century sailing ship of the type which carried thousands of emigrants across the Atlantic and a major indoor exhibition "Emigrants" complements the outdoor site. The Centre for Migration Studies can assist those who wish to find out more about emigration history and the way of life of emigrants and settlers.

I’ve been there a few times with youth groups and their Halloween "Ireland and North America was great fun and just a teeny bit scary. The actors and re-enactors do a good job and effort is made to draw meaningful parallels between North America and its Irish roots " Ulster Scots as well as the more familiar Irish Catholic story. I’ve attached a few shots of the last visitor group our community project brought there.
