Hofer is one of the discounter supermarkets in Austria. Compared to the others they have a reduced amount of products. They mostly sell own products nearly no brand products can be found there.

Even Hofer (ALDI) are a discount supermarket they have highest quality checks compared to all other supermarket chains in Austria. Its probably the one especially students prefer. You will find them anywhere in Austria in most towns. Compared to Billa, Spar and Merkur i would say they are about 30% cheaper. Hofer is a subsidiary of ALDI, the name hasn't been changed in Austria when when ALDI entered the Austrian market by buying a small supermarket chain called "Hofer" thats now already over 20 years ago.

Please note, these opening times are general opening times of this chain, there might diver for some branches:

Monday - Friday: 08:00 - 19:00
Saturday: 08:00 - 18:00
Sunday: Not Open

Keep in mind Austria has shorter opening hours than some other countries, on Sundays only a few (search for Billa on this side) have open.

Yes, it brought prices down in the other supermarkets that have held the monopoly for many years, but it also had a negative effect on our local produce. The cost of producing locally is higher than O/S due to higher wages and such. So there was bad with the good.
