Adam on the longtailboat from Pattaya beach to Sunlight beach

Despite the attitude of the islanders we actually had a great time on the island. We arrived on an overcast day and it was much cooler than the weather we'd been having on Langkawi. A truly welcome relief. Rain set in on the afternoon of our first day which we really enjoyed but it seems many of the people staying at Mountain resort were on their two week holiday and they seemed less than pleased by the rain. Seeing us walking around with beaming faces at it probably didn't help. The beach we stayed at, Sunlight beach, was beautiful but scared by the broken glass in the sealine. We had to tread very carefully when entering the water not to get cut and we suspect that many peple have been!! Communication with the restaurant staff was very difficult as they had no concept of service.

Bear in mind we were staying at what others who had been to the island told us was "the best place to stay as all the other places have staff with attitude problems", I hate to think what they were like. To be honest most of the other places we saw looked awful, really run down and dirty rooms and when we asked for prices they were asking for silly money, 900 Baht for a rundown dirty shack!! We were only paying 600 at Mountain and at least our room was relatively stable and more or less clean!!

The poor weather continued the next day but it suited our routine well, a morning swim, breakfast, reading on our sheltered balcony, lunch, a stroll, games, beers and dinner etc etc. The funniest times were sat on our balcony during the rain when four longtailed boats stuffed with local children arrived at the beach.

It was like watching a re-enactment of the normandy landings as the boats hit the shore and lifejacket wearing kids hit the beach and ran for shelter. We swear some were even zig zagging as if avoiding incoming missiles. Very entertaining.

The resort never committed to allowing us to stay so we were working on a day to day basis and after two days of bad service and being held in contempt we'd taken all we could of paradise so booked our ferry and set off for Trang.

Our second night was interupted at 2.20 by an earthquake off the coast of Indonesia, Steph didn't feel it but Adam being at one with nature woke up to experience the slight shaking. No Tsunami but the warning signs are everywhere. Seems that's where much of the money donated went as they are every few yards or so it seems.

You are right, it does look like paradise. Shame about the people! Not sure we would have enjoyed the earthquake. Felt no tremor from the one here.
