An incredible day!

THE BRIDGE CLIMB IS PHENOMENAL!

That has got to be one of the most incredible experiences of my life!  I have to admit, I was a little apprehensive before we started.  There is quite a bit of prep time and that also gives you time to get nervous.

Before you start you are given a breathalyzer test and then you are outfitted with all your gear.  You cannot take anything with you on the climb - not even a watch.  We had to put all of our belongings into lockers and then put on coveralls.  From then they gave us all of the gear we would need - the safety harness, radios, hats, etc.

They explain how everything works and then have you practice on a practice rig they have set up in the building.  After that, you head on out to the bridge!

The first part of it I liked the least.

Same spot but with the Opera House in the background.
At least starting out, by the time we hit that part on our way back it wasn't a problem for me.  You start out on the approach to the arch on catwalks underneath the roadway.  These catwalks are very narrow and are mostly wooden planks, but in some areas are steel mesh. On one of the sections of steel mesh you could look down between your feet right into the harbor!

Once we got below the arch we had to climb a series of ladders to get up to the arch.  This is the part I didn't like. The ladders were kind of like very steep staircases with very narrow steps set very close together.  I kept banging my shins on these.  It also made me nervous to be climbing up these ladders on the edge of the bridge that high up!

Once we got to the arch, it was very easy and just awesome!  We walked straight up the arch.

At the top of the arch between the spans.
The views were just incredible.  I just wish we could have taken our cameras.  I have included some pictures that our guide took of us.  Mine are horrible and I have that bandage on my nose, but what the heck.  I also included some pictures I took from the ferry of the the bridge and the bridge climbers.

I have to say - if you ever find yourself in Sydney, the Bridge Climb is a must!

The entire thing takes about 3.5 hours, so after that and some lunch, I decided to take the Manly Ferry and go explore one of the beaches.  That sounds a little odd - maybe I should just say that I took the Ferry to Manly!  Anyway, it's a gorgeous little beach town.  I've included some pictures I took from the ferry and in Manly.

Hey Kenny,
Sounds like you're having fun! Wish we could be there with you - but hey, living vicariously through you will just have to do. Glad you enjoyed the bridge climb - we've done it once and want to try the night climb next!

If you have some extra "ferry time", be sure to check out Watson's Bay (a great place for dinner) and Mosman - near the Zoo and the place we hope to rent an apartment for a few weeks.

What Sydney hotel are you in?

Have Fun, Randy & Lonie
