We're All Going on a Summer Holiday, and there's an anti-cylone!
Mark and I spent our summer holiday of 2006 in
We were there over Mark's birthday and the Beau Rivage Hotel was great - staff sent chocolates to our room and we had a fantastic coffee birthday cake during a meal at the Indouchine Restaurant.
Most of the time we stayed in the hotel and relaxed, although yes, we were smack back in the middle of an anti-cyclone! Some days it was blazing sunshine, other days it was sunny and within a minute the sky would completely fill with clouds, and the heavens would open, and on one day it just rained constantly, and that was the day we decided to do the island tour! It was a bit of a shame because we couldn't appreciate the views properly, but at least it wasn't a day of sunbathing we missed out on!
We also took a day trip on a yacht out to One&Only Le Tousserok's private island, Ile aux Cerfs, which is also open to anyone not staying at the hotel! I was a tad burnt that day so managed to stay out of the sun by going shopping and buying some locally made jewellery!
We went to One&Only Le Saint Geran for dinner one night, which was amazing! All the One&Only hotels are totally different, and this was very traditionally Mauritian.
We had a tour with the General Manager, who'd previously been at One&Only Kanahura when I was there in June 2004 with my parents, and the weird thing is he remembered me!
We also went to Le Tousserok - which now isn't a One&Only, which is a shame, but the website looks nice - for lunch one afternoon. We did have a bit of a problem getting in though! The guard at the gate house said Residents Only! We asked him to call ahead to see if we could have lunch because we were thinking about coming back for our honeymoon, so we got in that way! Lunch was amazing - we watched people swimming out to a raft in the bay to sunbathe, and then they got picked up by canoe when they were finished - the canoe would also bring out their beach bags with sun cream, books etc! That's service!
I managed to water-ski a few times although the water was so choppy and the winds were very high as well - that combined with the threat of falling onto coral meant I stayed up the few times I did get out!
We had a great time until our last day - we were pretty much packed and ready to go, had a bite to eat in the room and were watching a film before we were being picked up quite late in the evening.
Mark was feeling unwell and the hotel doctor came to see him, leaving a tube of effervescent Asprin and Vitamin C for him...how odd! He took one dose but it didn't do any good.
He slept most of the way to the airport, and in the departure lounge, the other couple from the hotel who were also flying out asked if he wanted a Neurofen. They gave us two, which is two doses, but Mark took both at the one time = his ulcer flared up and he vomited the whole flight from
Anyway, the radioed ahead to DBX and Mark was taken off in a wheelchair, straight into the airport medical centre and put on an IV drip! I was given eight little brown envelopes with various remedies, some for diahrrea, some anti-emetics, and some pain killers.
The doctor, who was very nice and sympathetic, reckoned Mark had gastro-enteritis.
Needless to say Mark didn't take any and thankfully slept the whole flight back to
We did feel bad walking past the man with the Donnelly/ McPherson sign in the Arrivals hall...oh yeah, and after two days in bed, Mark was fine!
