Crown Prince Willem-Alexander marries Maxima Zorreguieta

Totally by chance, we were in Amsterdam the day Crown Prince Willem-Alexander married Maxima Zorreiguieta, an Argentinian. There was controversery surrounding the wedding as the bride's father, Jorge, was agriculture minister during Argentina's 1976-83 military dictatorship when up to 30,000 people vanished or were killed. He was barred from the wedding - or I think he may have decided not to come to keep the peace. But the Dutch appear to have taken Maxima to their hearts because she'd made a big effort to fit in - learning Dutch, etc. If memory serves Maxima was given away by her brother, and her mother was at the wedding.

The whole city (and probably the whole country) was obsessed with the wedding...the run up to it was documented minutely on TV news and pretty much the whole city turned out on 02.02.02 to see the Royal Couple pass through the city in a Cinderella-esque golden coach.

It was amazing to see how the people came together to welcome the woman who'll one day be Queen, and how highly respected the Royal Family is in Holland.

Thanks Andrea! It was a great day...I was totally squished in the street, but because every one was in such a good mood it was fun!

You put that very nicely, and you are so right about the Royal Family being highly respected. Of course there are always people who prefer a republic but the majority thinks this is the best thing for our country.
