Another little holilday in 2005

The view from our balcony

OK, we totally spoiled ourselves in the first year we were together - 5 trips abroad, and a few weekends at home too!

Three days after my 23rd birthday in March 2005, Mark was admitted to hospital because he was having major problems with his right elbow. Over three days it went from sore to unmoveable, and the consultant we saw thought he had septic arthritis which could lead to septicaemia, so he was admitted to hospital for 9 days in case he got seriously ill. It turned out he had a major case of tennis elbow, but he had to have it drained and it seemed to be a big problem for him. So on the Sunday he was in hospital we were reading the Sunday Times and we saw a deal for 7 nights in Sri Lanka. What the hey we thought, we deserve a treat (ahem) so Mark booked it from his sick bed and three weeks later we were off, flying BMI to Heathrow and then Sri Lankan Airways out to Colombo.

That was great because Sri Lankan are partners with Emirates and we got frequent flyer miles!

On arrival in Colombo it was a three and a half hour drive to the hotel, which had been badly damaged by the tsunami just 5 months earlier, although miraculously no-one at the hotel died (I've seen a video on YouTube of it hitting and I'm amazed no one was killed). There was still a very faint smell of damp in the lower corridors, but that was the only place I noticed it. The hotel was great and we upgraded to a junior suite (for about £10 each per night it was well worth it) and had our own butler who asked us lots of questions, and told us his wife and children were on a train further north which was hit by the tsunami and they all died - he went and looked for them and found all their corpses.

Another lovely sunset
He was lovely and said he's just getting on with things now, and that there was nothing else for it.

Anyway, I got totally crisped on the first day and pretty much had to spend the rest of the time with a t-shirt on! There was rain most days around 3pm but that was usually the time we were happy enough to head back to the room for a nap. I'll admit we never really adjusted to Sri Lanka time - we arrived late evening and had something to eat and watched a film on the first night. We stayed up a while and got up for breakfast the next day and went back to sleep! And that was pretty much the pattern, although 2 days in a row we didn't make breakfast! We were just happy to be somewhere hot we could relax!

We'd love to go back and tour, although things seem a bit unstable just now. Let's see what happens in the future.
