leaving for Bocas del Toro

Just like with New Year's Eve I had figured that the best place for carnaval would either be a large city, or a tiny village near the sea. Well, the only large city we could think of was Panama City, but heading straight there would mean we'd skip half a country. So instead we opted for the Bocas Del Toro islands in the Caribbean north.

But to get there we first had to do some backtracking to David, from where we took a bus to the town of Almirante at the Caribbean coast. So from the mountainous central heart land we travelled to the Pacific south coast after which we crossed the country to the Caribbean north coast. And all that in the span of a few hours! :-)

The bus trip was rather uneventful, but the 'ferry' to Bocas was quite a nice experience. It wasn't so much a ferry, but more like a water taxi, a small motor boat packed with people and goods. And the trip was wonderfully tranquil, the water like a mirror almost without ripple. We may have been sailing to an island, but as there are so many islands and peninsulas shading the water from the tides, it seemed more as if we were crossing a lake than that we were crossing the sea.
