the boat to El Petencito

Once across the border we took a minibus to Flores. All of a sudden I had to speak Spanish again, which took some getting used to after speaking English for a week.

Flores is a really nice town, situated on the tiny island in the middle of the Petén Itza lake. It is connected to the mainland by a bridge, where the ‘real’ city is located, Santa Elena.

After a stroll through town, trying to find a working ATM (which are quite rare here) the five of us took a little boat to the island of El Petencito, which is a small, free zoo. We spent about an hour walking around with mixed feelings. The cages were awfully small, and the lynx and leopards and monkeys did not seem to be particularly happy, but on the other hand chances of seeing these animals in the wild are close to nil.
Either way the island was very nice and a good place to spend an afternoon.

We also went to the Santa Elena airport to book a flight back to Cancún for our dad. He had the choice between taking a bus (12 hours) or the plane (1 hour) and obviously he chose the faster, more comfortable option of the two. Unlike Tally and Laura who would join us to Tikal tomorrow and take the bus straight back to Cancún the day after.

In the evening we went for dinner together with Tally and Laura and three Germans we had met. It was good fun, but we all retired early, as we had quite some demanding days ahead.
