Valkenburg Castle...Finally!

Valkenburg Travel Blog › entry 88 of 347 › view trip summary

Summary of my travels since starting to travel for work in 2004. Three continents and three jobs later, this blog is an ongoing work in process. All locations are entered through present, will be adding descriptions and pictures as I have the opportunity. Please let me know if you see an entry without info you would like me to upload pictures for and I can take care of adding that location's items sooner.

Valkenburg Castle...Finally!

After a year's worth of unsuccessful attempts to make it to Valkenburg Castle before it closed for the day, I finally made it.  The ruins are nice, but I can only imagine what this castle must have looked like when it was still standing.  More impressive than the outer castle are the charcoal drawings in the caves under the castle.  This is the true attraction and if you go to the castle, you have to go underground into the cave to see the drawings.  You will be impressed.

From the 60-year-old signatures that look like they were just drawn yesterday to some true works of art, it's quite amazing what the men and women hiding out in these caves during WWII were able to accomplish by gaslight.
