Flew Asiana into Shanghai.  Decent enough flight…breezed through immigration and customs and was in the hotel in no time flat.  Nice day so went for a stroll to the market under the Science and Technology museum then into Puxi where I walked around the West Nanjing Road area which I’m not too familiar with yet.  Had a small dinner at Yuxiang Family restaurant, the excellent Sichuan place on the 6th floor of Super Brand Mall (across from Pearl Tower) that my colleague told me about in March.  Went back to Puxi and had a couple beers at Malones and listed to the music for a while.  Decided to head back to Pudong and had one beer at the sports bar across from my hotel (40 RMB for a pint vs.

55 RMB for a half pint in the hotel).

Before going to bed around midnight, I decided I wanted a bottle of water from the convenience store on the third corner of the intersection before heading to the hotel.  In front of the store was a little street BBQ cooking up sticks of different kinds of meats and vegetables.  I walked past, stopped, thought, and decided what the heck, I can try one.  As I turned back, a guy who was sitting there turned to his girlfriend (I hadn’t even noticed them while walking over) and mentioned something along the lines of, “He’s gonna have trouble tomorrow!”  We started talking, and it turns out the guy (August) is from the US and the girl (Mira) is from Finnland, recently moved from Shenzen to Shanghai, and they are about to be married.  They’ve lived in China a few years, spoke great Mandarin, and knew the area quite well.  They helped me with the order, we shared some beers (brand name: REEB, with the red top), kept running into the convenience store for more beers (something like 30-cents a can!), talking with the locals who were also enjoying the skewers and beer, and next thing we know, it was around 3:30, we’re all pretty tanked and full of beef, lamb, chicken, mutton, asparagus, green beans, eggplant, etc. and we decided to meet up for a brunch around 1:30 the next day…
