I'm an honorary apprentice! (along with everybody else)
I started the day out by going to the Guinness Storehouse where you do a self-guided tour of the Guinness-making process. Although it was Valentine’s Day, I un-romantically walked around Dublin alone: St. Patrick’s Park (and, of course Cathedral - which was under renovation); Grafton St.; St. Stephen’s Green; Temple Bar; bridges over the Liffey… nice. For some reason I ended up in a TGI Fridays (of all places) right across from St. Stephen’s Green. On one of their walls downstairs they had a huge “Back With a Vengeance” poster of the Chicago Bears. Growing up in Chicago in the 80s, the Bears were my favorite team & I had this same poster on my wall for a number of years (granted not as huge as this one).
Later, in some pub in Temple Bar, I learned of the Northern Illinois University (NIU) shootings that had just taken place.
The volume was off on the TV of course (this being a pub, not a sports bar) but I saw footage of NIU’s campus which is not all that far from home. After about 20 min, somebody decided to change the channel to MTV … I can only guess that a campus shooting spree wasn’t setting the right tone. I walked back to Grafton St. and decided to try Bruxelles (a bar suggested to me by fellow TB member AleksandraEa) which was a pretty good place to finish off the night.
Bruxelles & once again "The Wait"
Well, to finish off the night out anyway, back at the hostel I met two Polish girls, an Italian guy and a Scottish guy. We were all huddled away in a corner by the pool table because in the TV room some guy was snoring away with his shoes off, and his feet smelled SO BAD, worse than any feet I’ve ever smelled before (not that I’m particularly a connoisseur in the art of sniffing feet… but still!)
