Rotterdam
Although you wouldn't say so when walking in this town, Rotterdam is an old city. It got it's name of its situation on the small river Rotte where people made a dam. The place has even older city rights than its rival city Amsterdam. Count William III granted the place in 1328. About 30 years later the city got walls of which you still can see a part hanging on the roof of the underground train station Blaak. The oldest big building is the Laurenskerk, for a part surviving world war II. On May 14th 1940 the Germans bombed the entire city heart. This is why the city looks modern. On the other hand, architects often get free hand to create the most interesting buildings. Here you find creations of among others Piet Blom and Koolhaas. At the moment there's a enormous rebuilding project of the train station.
Large appartment buildings grow out of the ground like mushrooms. Thus, nickname for Rotterdam is "Manhattan on the Maas".In 2000 Rotterdam was not only cultural capital of Europe, but also the centre of football with the finals of the European Championship. Italy won the final in De Kuip, home stadium of Feyenoord (worldchampion 1970). Rotterdam is a cultural city. Most famous museum is Boymans - Van Beuningen. There are yearly great festivals like Summer carnival and the Dance Parade. Rotterdam marathon once had the world record.
First of all, Rotterdam is famous because of its huge port. You can have a (day) trip by boat on the Spido, most interesting!
I frequently update this blog with new photos, so if you're a Rotterdam lover, just have a look at this blog now and then!
