I had already been in Belize for two weeks with my parents so I arrived early, already well tanned, and was found drinking rum in the pool when the rest of the crew showed up. Nine of us had rented a really, really nice house on the edge of the sea for the week. There was one couple, Stover and Ashley, and the rest of us were all single! The house was officially named Ina Tan Kanab (Inna Gadda Davida), but we called it the Real World Akumal house, because you never know what will happen when you get that many singles together with that much alcohol.
The wedding was going to be big for an out of country affair. We were looking forward to over 100 folks in such a small little beach community. Texas had invaded Akumal! The rest of our friends were all married or long term couples and had gotten their own condos and houses further north up the beach. Of course, our house had no plans to get much sleep, so everyone ended up at our place every night, because the only rules were "no glass by the pool" and "be careful on the stairs!". Everything else was fair game. Que pachanga!
There was a little bar on the beach between our house and the rest of the wedding partys' accomodations. La Buena Vida became our regular haunt at happy hour every evening, and for most dinners. We could drink, eat, swing, karaoke, drink, play on the beach, climb the treehouse, and drink. La Buena Vida had it all. They even had the drinks with the little umbrellas in them that seem to be prerequisites for some folks' beach vacations.
So this May 23, 2007 was our first night in Akumal, and we made it a night to misremember.
