we overnighted in Temuco (yawn... boring place... although i'd advise anyone that the Lonely Planet was WRONG again and half the hostels have closed down there. so don't do what we did and show up at the bus station at 10pm with nowhere to stay and be informed by the taxi driver that the hotel we did want was knocked down last year) and then rode over to Pucon.
all i can say is WOW. the place reminds me quite a lot of Queenstown in NZ: fabulous vista up every street in town, a really good vibe and lots of good food. of yes and did i mention the smoking volcano that towers over the town? in one of our more crazy moments we climbed the volcano to the summit and had a peek down the crater. took about 6 hours in total initially trekking, before putting on the crampons and going up the sheer ice. the top was the hardest as it was really steep and very very loose. a couple of hairy moments but a great sense of achievement.
another new doggy friend followed us about town on the second day (Scampi we named him) but fortunately for my heartstrings he pissed off of his own accord.
the hostel we stayed at was lovely - massive room and crispy sheets on the bed - if a little OCD. there were notes everywhere with instructions on what and what not to do and where.
anyway we'll be back in the big city soon. off to Santiago...
