Little India and the Night Safari

The elevators in our second hotel, the Concord.

On Sunday, 11/7/04, we changed hotels to stay at what was at that time called the Concord - but is now a Holiday Inn.  The locals also call it the "Glass Hotel", because it so tall and completely made out of glass.  On the inside, the middle of the hotel is taken up by a huge bank of elevators in the center.  There were good things about this hotel, such as the fact that it was close to China Town, and the price was great (Got it on priceline for about $50 US) but there were a few drawbacks too; since the atruim ran up the middle of the building it could carry noise at night, and also it was just kind of run down a bit, especially the bathroom.  But it was a good deal for the money.

We then head out with my cousins to Little India for the afternoon.

Kim and Pam in Little India
It was an amazing area of town.  The sights and sounds were overwhelming.  You can soak in the atmosphere, get a henna tattoo, shop (Michelle and Gracie loved shopping for fancy sandals) beautiful jewelry, or try some great Indian food.  It was just a blur of hustle and bustle.  We walked around for quite a while, and Pam bought some veggies to take home.  There was also an inside food court in the area by the parking structure, which I have a picture of at the bottom of this page that you should look at!  Pig's organ soup wasn't something I really wanted to try, I'm not that brave!

That evening, we went to check out the night safari.  This is the only night zoo of it's kind in the world, dedicated to nocternal animals.  You go at night, and there are both walking paths and a tram ride.

The Night Safari!
This is a WONDERFUL experience, in the rain forest, and I would never want someone to go to Singapore and not check this out.  You can either find your way up there, (the taxis are not too expensive) or you can go as part of a little tour that will pick you up at your hotel and drive you up there.  We took the little tour that picked us up.  It was inexpensive, took care of all the transportation, and included a great dinner at the Night Safari.  The included dinner was actually quite good; chicken and beef satay, different currys, desserts... there was a lot to choose from.  The other nice thing about doing it this way was that there were other people on the little bus with you, and so you met people you wouldn't have met otherwise; from Australia, New Zealand, Europe.
The Night Safari bathrooms, outside - Bali style!
.. it was a great experience.  The one drawback to the tour is that it departs again right at 10:00, and that gives you limited time in the Night Safari - I could have stayed quite a bit longer!!!  So don't waste too much time munching on the dinner, get on those paths and see the Night Safari!!!  As our Tour Guide kept telling us, "Keep on Walking - Worry 'bout yourself!!!"

Also, if you go, make sure to check out the bathrooms - they are outside, Bali-Syle.  Quite a little shock when you open the door and find yourself back outside again!
