Friday before Mardi Gras
First of all, I have to explain that Mardi Gras is not just one day. Although the name is Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras is more a group of days. It's not a fixed day in the year, it will change according to Easter.
Anyway, the first day of MG or when everything begins is the Friday before the Fat Tuesday. People start going to the French Quarter and the balconies, to drink, eat and throw beads. But this day is more for the local people. Tourists will arrive on Saturday. So, if this is your first Mardi Gras is better starting this day taking it easy, so you will be get adjusted to this fest :)
In my case, we had a balcony and everything started pretty early. It wasn't even 11am and we were already having a couple of drinks at a balcony in the French Quarter.
It was a bit chilly, at least for me. But we were having so much fun. I was there with 4 friends, a couple, a girl and another girl from NYC. It was her first MG too. We were having a blast there. The couple left, they were my hosts and had to go to the airport to pick up some friends form San Francisco. Rebeca, Sharon and me stayed at the French Quarter, but decided to move. We went to a bar at the French Quarter - not a balcony anymore.
At this place I realized the importance of saying it was my first MG, hahaha. Everyone was happy, I'm having my first MG, so free drinks for the new MG girls hahaha. We stayed there for a while and even got an invitation for the Pat O'Brien's Balcony on Sunday. But not sure I'm gonna be able to do it.
My friends weren't able to come back to French Quarter with the car anymore, so they stayed at a small bar at the Warehouse District. We just took a taxi and met them there. We stayed in this small, cozy bar until the first parade was starting. It was Morpheus parade. I didn't just enjoy the parade, but also became friend of the cops, hahaha. My first parade :)
