3rd Stop: Hope Cemetery and Barre Granite Quarry

A view of some of the astonishing tombstones of Hope Cemetery in Barre, VT.

I had heard rumors of the famous monument carvers from Barre, VT, but was unprepared for the astonishing tombstones of Hope Cemetery. Opened in 1896, this graveyard is an art gallery, celebrating life in the midst of death with some of the most compelling, and quirky, art cemetery stonests in the nation. Some find my photos of various gravesites across the nation kinda quirky, but there is truly something magical and beautiful about how the light bounces off certain types of stone and the magnificent carvings that can be found in our nation's cemeteries. The granite quarries were all closed since it was at the end of the day on Wednesday when we got there. But I did manage to get some great photos of a couple of quarries that were permanently closed and full of water at sunset.

The Hilltop Restaurant

OK, we're in Barre, VT so I have to remind myself to keep my expectations in check and not let them run wild. After driving through Hope Cemetery, we stopped by this restaurant that was recommended by a friend (actually she was with us when we went here). Service was friendly and attentive. Decor was kind of like being in a Cracker Barrel with no dividers but with carpet. I chose the special of the day: Sirloin Steak and hot wings with a baked potato. Yes, you read correctly. Can't say I've ever heard of that combination either but it was verygood. I felt like I needed a coronary bypass afterward from the way my cholesterol level jumped 100 points, but oh well. I definately recommend hitting the salad bar and getting a thick slice (you slice your own) of those homemade breads at the end! Bam! They're awesome!
