Ile de Gorée
September 25, 2006
Ohhh, what a hot night. Indeed we had a ventilator (one for two persons) but I sweated all the night. I didn't know how to lie. To open the door in the morning was absolutely marvelous - fresh and chilly air.
Our day trip was a visit on the island Goree - an ancient slave island. Today it's an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Depending on the color of the houses you can be aware of which country built it (e.g. France, Holland).
While waiting for the boat we could visit the market at the harbour. There we've seen shrimps resting in the sun - without ice. Hmmm... Bon appétit! ;)
Of course the informal sector mustn't be absent. They already wanted to sell their stuff (especially jewel) on the boat. This people accompanied us during the whole tour. Some of us bought a necklace, one even a picture.
Of course we visited the old slavery house. The guide told us horrible things about the life conditions of the slaves. For example always two slaves were chained together. If one was getting sick the alerters throw them both (!) into the sea. Horrible!
