We had gotten word from other locals that Petit Jean was one of the better state parks in Arkansas so we had to go check it out. And after doing some research online it looked like a great state park. However it may have bee too good in the sense that there were no camp sites available and we took the 4 hour drive after work that friday just to find out we did not have a place to stay and we would not be able to set up our tent. So we decided to take our chances with the cheap hotels in the area in which they were all "no vacancy" until we found a "Shady 6" (motel 6) a couple of towns away. We didn't really have the energy or the heart to drive 4 hours back home.
Anyway, we slept in our sleeping bags inside the hotel being unsure or what we wanted to expose ourselves to. We worked our way back to Petit Jean for just a day of exploring before heading back home. And I was sad because it really was a beatiful park. At one of the lookout points on the bluffs a wedding was taking place over looking a bend in the river, very pretty. And the hiking trails available in the park were great. Of course the park was full so the trail that took us down to the crate was very busy and the crater was filled with people jumping off rocks, and just large crowds. And the water level was a little low. I have seen a few pictures of the same spot here on TB and the waterfall and everything just looks much more beautiful and tranquil without the crowds of people. But we can't go back. Because we are in Arkansas for only one year so we will need to see some of the other parks; Magazine, Diamond Crater State Park, and many other locations.
