Love does move in  mysterious ways. The dream of passionate lover came true when Philippine Airlines sealed a 12-year relationship between two highschool sweet hearts during a Vancouver-Las Vegas flight on September 21, 2007.

It all started when the airlines Customer Relations office received an email from Oliver Agala of Vancouver, Canada last September 19. What was expected to be a usual letter of complaint turned out to be one of the greatest favors a passenger could ask from an airline. Usually, such requests are not honored by the airline, but Oliver’s message moved a few PAL executives in the Vancouver station and the flight crew.  Preparations continued with exchanges of emails.

And so came the big day. While the passengers of the flight were set to board, the people who were part of this undertaking were filled with excitement. Some station officials, the pilot and the rest of his crew acted like a production crew of a Hollywood movie. They were the only ones privy to the romantic affair about to unfold while everybody else expected the usual routine flight.

As PR106 took off, Oliver tried to calm his rapidly beating heart while waiting for the purser’s cue of the “action” which would take place after the meal. When the right time came, the purser gave Oliver the signal which made him approach the public address system. The purser announced, “Ladies and Gentlemen, one of our passengers onboard would like to make a very important announcement.” Oliver took over the microphone and said, “Ms. Joanna Valderama, will you marry me?”

Upon hearing the very familiar voice, Joanna broke into tears as Oliver approached her and fell on his knees with a diamond ring in his hand. Joanna replied with a broken voice, “Yes,” while still crying with joy. A sense of euphoria filled the entire cabin as passengers cheered for and applauded the newly engaged couple. The rest of the crew came out with two bottles of champagne and offered the couple and their friends a toast to celebrate this event. The mood of the flight was transformed- love was in the air.

For Oliver and Joanna, it was indeed a dream come true. And so their love story will be entwined with the airline for the rest of their lives.

(Thanks to fellow PALer Chary and Mabuhay Mag for sharing this story. Thanks also to Oliver and Joanna for a great love story.)
