Sunset Cruise in the Ambergris Caye

Joining Janene and her two good friends Kara and Jon to celebrate her 30th birthday in Guatemala and Belize. Guatemala was super adventurous and Belize was beautiful.

Sunset Cruise in the Ambergris Caye

"Cheerio chap! A good day for yachting!"

So finally, the weather clears up. It's warm and slightly cloudy, but a whole lot better than the last couple of days. It seems that the storm last night was the last bad storm of our visit as the sun finally peeks out from behind white clouds.

I am feeling super cooped up, I mean, I can only "relax" for so long and am anxious to get into town. I have an itch to buy stuff, and hope to find some goodies to bring home with me.

The four of us catch the water taxi and zoom towards our destination, San Pedro. San Pedro is the main town in the Ambergris. It is very popular with tourists and locals alike. When we arrive, we see that the town spans about 3 streets wide. Dirt roads throughout the town don't discourage drivers that speed through the wet streets, not in their cars, but in golf carts.

Cars are not allowed on the island and the streets are too narrow anyways.

Being used to the relative quiet at our condo, (it is off season, after all) it is a little overwhelming to be in the sunshine with so many people. Local kids run through the streets with thier dogs, and older men wearing Burmuda's and sunglasses go take their wives into local stores buying jewlery and cigars.

The first really interesting store that we find specializes in Mayan Jade. It has a little museum attached and we spend a lot of time in this store admiring the jewelry. Janene and Kara like some of the oversized jade necklaces and I like the little jade figures of Mayan gods.

We get hungry and ask around where a good place is to stop and get some grub.

We find ourselves at the Reef Restaurant. The decor is super island/nautical themed and we are the only one's that are there. They have a lobster taco plate, so I order that and a Belikan beer. The tacos are great! To make them even better, the waiter puts out about 4 different hotsauces to go with them. I love hotsauce and Janene and I try them all. WooHoo! They are super hot!

Back in town we enter a store that has all sorts of different types of locally made alcohol. Now this is my kind of place! Alcohol always makes a good souvenier! I purchased some of the drink they call a "Pantyrippa" and some local rum that tasts like coffee. The "pantyrippa" tastes kind of like Malibu and Rum, but it is way better. I have a feeling I am going to like this drink.

Luckily, the same store sells cigars, so I purchase quite a few for my guy friends back home.

We shop around a little more before it is time for us to return to the condo. We were lucky enough to be able to charter a small sailboat tonight that will take us on a sunset cruise complete with drinks and dinner.

We all take a little nap, tired from being in the sun all day, and Janene and I wake early to get ready for the cruise. We are a little loopy for some reason and start talking in British accents to each other. I don't know why, but we seem to think that only those with a british accent will go boating at sunset.

It is quite early when we are ready so we walk down to the outdoor bar to get some drinks and smoke some cigars. The bartender is really nice and makes some fancy drinks for us to try. I bust out the Cubans and they are super strong! Janene and I immediatly get hammered and continue our attempt at the British accents. "I say, lets go yachting today..."

The little sailboat arrives and we board. We have a captain and a skipper who are super nice and accomadating. They caught lobster that morning and made them into little lobster tacos for us with beans and rice. Additionally, there was a huge plastic bin filled with Rum Punch. Yummy!

The evening was beautiful and quiet. We watched the sunset, ate our meal, drank and relaxed. What a beautiful night.
