People i met here, who contributed to and improved my trip: Juliana (Russia)
We arrived at 22.00 and followed the directions on our map to reach our hotel. After 30 minutes walking around, getting more confused and receiving contradicting directions from passers by, it became apparent that the train had in fact stopped in a small station on the outskirts. We decided we should catch a taxi to our hotel, which proved a sensible choice, as it was several kilometres further.
We awoke, full of optimism for the new day, but this soon began to vanish. Firstly we wanted to catch an evening bus to Tai'an so as we could visit the nearby Zhengding. At the bus station, we were told there was only one bus available at 13.30, that would cost 3 times as much as we were led to believe. With little other option, we bought the tickets and decided to look around the centre.
We went to the Martyrs Mausoleum, a nice site dedicated to those lost at war. Particularly moving were 2 displays to foreign doctors, who had come over from India and Canada to aid the Chinese, but died whilst serving their adopted mother land. We had little time to do anything else, so headed back to the bus station to jump on what we expected to be a luxury bus (due to the price). To finish the day off, our bus ended up an old, smelly, uncomfortable wreck. The only saving grace was it got us to our destination in one piece!
