People i met here, who contributed to and improved my trip: Juliana (Russia)

We arrived into Hangzhou East train station, off the back of an overnight journey from Nanjing and caught the bus into the city centre to the main train station, which took about 45 minutes. It was only 7am, so we decided to buy onward tickets to Shanghai for the same night, as we had only come to the city to see one main attraction. This accomplished and a KFC breakfast in our stomachs, we jumped on a bus to the World famous West Lake. The weather was getting better the further South we were heading and other than a bit of fog, it was perfect weather to take a stroll around the lake.

After an hour or so walking around the edge, we decided to hop on a boat and visited our first island in the centre of the lake, which was the perfect place to sit, enjoy a beer and watch the boats drift by. We caught the boat to the second island, which had a carp pond and also some tranquil footpaths to stroll along. After catching the boat back to shore, we walked through the botanical gardens, before making our way back to the bus stop to catch our train. We asked a handful of people (and showed them our map) which bus to catch and they all agreed No.7 went to the station. The bus, like many in China, did not take a direct route, but snaked between the streets and soon i was completely lost as to where we were. Having mistakenly jumped off one too many buses in China, due to losing our bearings, we decided we wouldn't fall for it again! The time ticked down and still no sign of the station, however, we did recognise some landmarks, which reassured us we were somewhere familiar.

That familiar place ended up been the EAST train station!

Train missed, we headed back to the main station to see if there were any trains later in the day. Luckily the ticket lady remembered us, told us to wait a minute and came back with new tickets for a train in 2 hours time, completely free of charge, a really generous, kind thing to do for us. From a fuming, depressed mess, i transformed into a happy, thankful, greatful character, both sad and relieved to be leaving Hangzhou! West Lake had definitely proved worthy of making a detour to see.
