Moray Eels getting a bit narked

People i met here, who contributed to and improved my trip: Julia (Russia), Joel and Rachael (England), Rich (England), Scuba Jeff (Malaysia), Chris (Philippines)

With stinging blisters on my toes and the remains of a sea urchin under my foot, i spent Tuesday just chilling out on the decking, playing some ludo with Rachael and Julia. However, when the chance of diving came up in the late afternoon, i decided that it was too good an opportunity to turn down, so donned my gear and went out to Lobster Lair.

Unforunately this was by far the worst dive that i did in Mabul or Sipadan as it was a pretty large group and there was only 1 dive master, Johnny, to try and look after everyone.

This was made harder by the fact that the levels of training and certification that everyone had received, varied greatly. We did do a nice double drift along a large wall however, where the currents go one way at one depth and then reverse only metres lower. Interesting sightings included 2 Moray Eels, who seemed to be shacked up together, making me think it was breeding season as this was the second time i'd seen it and had never seen it anywhere before. There were the regular Green Turtles and also Nudy Branch, a Hermit Crab and Porcupine Pufferfish, to name but a few species.

Back on Mabul i settled in for a chilled night, but the rum once more came into play as Rich, Julia and I ended up solving the World's problems around 1.30am from what i remember :) The following day we were awake by 8.30am and ready to go to Sipadan with Scuba Junkies again. We saw their boat approaching around 9am and went to the room to collect our gear.

To our surprise the boat only stopped a matter of a minute or 2 before leaving, not giving us chance to gather our stuff and board the boat! I figured that they would just be picking up some more customers first, as they hadn't asked anyone where we were or if we were going. As it turned out they never came back and we learned that there is a fierce rivalry between Uncle Changs and Scuba Junkies and thus they never normally pick people up from each others jettys. It was really annoying, as if they had told us of this problem when we booked the dives, we could have walked around to their jetty easily enough.

We ended up spending the day trying to organise another trip and luckily Uncle Changs sorted it for us to go to Sipadan on the 5th. This was quite fortunate as there are only so many permits issued per day by the authorities and this is not only for divers but snorkellers too.

We spent the rest of the 3rd and 4th chilling around Uncle Changs and waiting for Sipadan, part II. The reason that i wasn't too keen to go out snorkelling was because i found out that all the waste materials from the island are dumped straight into the water. It made me feel pretty repulsed to think of what i was swimming amongst, so i just gave it a miss! It also surprised me that they could have so little interest in preserving the coral and wildlife, located a matter of metres off shore.

UNCLE CHANG'S SIPADAN SONG

1. There's an island in the Celebes Sea,

The name's Sipadan you must go and see,

If you're a diver and you want the best

Come go along and we'll do the rest!

CHORUS: Well I'm glad to say the drop offs ok,

Barracuda points not far away,

Lobster Lair is also there

And the Hanging Gardens are very rare!

2.

View from our balcony
Diver down at the water side

Looking at the drop off with gaping eyes

Wondering whats there down below

Is it Nobby Clarke or Jacques Cousteau!?

CHORUS

3. There's Turtle Skeleton in Turtle Cave

You can go and see if you're feeling brave

Dive right in until it ends

But don't stay too long or you'll get the bends!

CHORUS

4. White Tip avenue and Turtle Patch

The Coral Gargen - There is no match

Soft coral, hard coral and see whips too

Tropical Fish to amaze you!

CHORUS

5. Jacques Cousteau and Calipso came

Oh...ze... micro paradise he did acclaim

Diver in silver up and down the reef

Cameras were clicking there was no relief

CHORUS

6. Well sad to say you're leaving tomorrow

Sipadan Island will be far away

I know that when you leave her shore

There'll be memories in your heart forever more!
