We should have known it was going to be a long day, as our mini van from Kompong Thom to Kompong Cham wouldn't even start in the parking lot. After a push start we were eventually going and shocked that we were the only people in the back of a van that could clearly fit a small army of Cambodians in! We arrived in Kompong Cham and decided to have a lunch break before heading on to Kratie.
As we waited for a mini van, they all passed with people crammed up against the window and with a roof full of people.
As the taxi pulled onto the road, i was accompanied by Julia, Jim and a Cambodian guy in the back. More horrifying were the 3 passengers in the front and the driver sat on one of their knees! Luckily the roads weren't busy and we decided to take it as part of the Cambodian experience. My thoughts on the journey soon changed to 'LET ME OUT OF THIS CAR!' though, when we noticed the drivers head nodding and his eyes closing. After 2 stops within a short time, so as he could splash his face and try to wake up, i offered to drive the car myself. He tried his hardest to protest he was fine and as we were in the middle of nowhere and it was getting dark, we got back into the taxi.
After dropping off 4 of the passengers, the driver seemed to get a new lease if life (or possibly his drugs kicked in) and he sang and whistled the remaining hour of our journey. We eventually arrived in Kratie, thankful to be alive to tell the tale.
