Medans main street during Ramadan

People i met here who contributed to, and improved my trip: Juliana (Russia), Ash (England)

It took 6 attempts to find a hotel in Medan, with our first choice been full and the others been overpriced dives. Having eventually settled on somewhere, we went to eat our Dinner in the night market and afterwards went to check up on the internet. This was quite infuriating as we were constantly hit by power cuts, which were becoming part of our every day life in Sumatra :)

As our bus to Banda Aceh didn't leave until Friday evening, we were left kicking our heels the following day.

Almost all of the food establishments were closed during the day for Ramadan, so the 3 of us decided to go to McDonalds. Upon arrival, the windows were covered with pink curtains and a pang of disappointment entered my head and stomach. However, upon closer inspection we saw people inside and i soon realised that the curtains were merely there as a courtesy, so as not to show people eating to all those passing fasters on the street. Funninly enough, there seemed to be plenty of Muslims in there, in their traditional outfits, presumably sneaking some food in on the sly!

Conveniently located next to Maccas was a shopping mall, which had an upstairs arcade, so we ventured in to waste some money on the games. After some shoot em ups, an air hockey tournament began and i can happily report that i scraped a narrow victory, with all competitors literally sweating their backsides off by the end of it! All in childish moods, the next stop was the bowling alley, where we made complete fools of ourselves. I don't think they had seen so many gutter balls in the history of their business and we ended up with almost all the staff watching us and directing us, but to no avail. It was all very embarrassing, with Ash proving to be the best of a very bad bunch :)

By the time it came for the 3 of us to go our seperate ways, we had fed Ash so many stories about the wonderful place that we were going, that he dropped his trip to Bali and ended up on the bus with us heading North! The journey took around 11 hours and with the aid of valium, we arrived relatively fresh into Banda Aceh a little after 7am.
