Klaipeda
People i met here who contributed to, and improved my trip:
Eric (America), Mark (America), Dannyboy (German living in Kalingrad)
was a character too
On my first day in Klaipeda i went to a former Russian missile base! This was an extremely impressive site, even in its delapadated state. Four huge silos that had once contained 23m long by 2m wide rockets, with 4m nuclear warheads, surrounded the main control room. In 1968, this facility had been on red alert and was only moments away from firing its rockets on Czeckoslovakia, where the people were rebelling against the communist regime.
On my second day, i took a day trip to Nida on the Curonian Spit, which joins Lithuania to the Russian state of Kalingrad.
Nida has the floating dunes of Parnadis, some realatively impressive sand dunes lined with forest. Id recommend going if you are in the area, but it wasnt anything to head out of your way for.I met the creator of this site, Eric, in Klaipeda. We had a few interesting nights out with another American called Mark, which usually consisted of the guys, who were about 2 metres tall, repeatedly warning us not to talk to any Lithuanian girls! Similar to Vilnius the range of music was rather amusing as were the Lithuanians dancing! One classic moment arrived as the dj had everyone up dancing to some pop song, then changed the music into a Bryan Adams slow dance song. Just like been 14 again, the Lithuanian guys grabbed the nearest girl to take her up for a romantic dance! It was hilarious to watch, as the guys didnt know where to put their hands or what to do next..... oh to be young again! The girls also loved wearing huge sunglasses inside the clubs, although on at least one occasion this was to cover up the ladies extremely wrinkled face!
