Are people of Wien called Wieners? (because people of Hamburg are called Hamburgers.)
December 19, 2007
So, I'm waiting at the hostel waiting for my friend, Alma, to meet up with me. I haven't seen her since last year. How funny that the last time I saw her was in Hawaii when I returned from Europe. Now, we're meeting in Europe!
Well, I came into Vienna last night and once I got out of the airport, I felt the freezing temps hit my face, hands, and legs! It's soooooo coooooooold here! I was waiting for the bus in the cold too. It was kind of cool to see my breath in the air (haha I know I can't get over it). I also realized that I've been having some difficulty breathing assuming it's because of the cold weather. I often have to take deep breaths or something. Well, I was so tired and jet lagged when I arrived at the hostel (around 19:00 or 7pm). HA and when I was filing out a form when I arrived in the hostel, I could barely write legibly because my hands were shaking. I was thinking of just sleeping for the night but nah. I'm in Europe! Every minute counts! So, I decided to go to the Advent Market (aka Xmas market) at the City Hall. I walked out of the metro, and the first thing I said when I saw the City Hall was, "Aww so pretty!" The Advent Market was closed by the time I got there but there were people still hanging out.
Aahh it's hard to adjust to European time especially since Europe is 11 hours ahead from Hawaii (12 hours ahead during the summer)! I woke up at 5:00 this morning (16:00 or 4:00pm Hawaii time). For today, I went to see a few sights: St. Stephen Church, Haas House, Hofburg Palace, and the Advent Market at City Hall. I like the Advent Market. I tried punsch (pronounced like poonch) for the first time and I like it especially amaretto punsch and fruit punsch. I realized that I like little babies and toddlers in winter clothes. So cute!! They're so wrapped up in puffy winter clothes and it's like they can't move their arms and they sometimes walk like penguins. Even when they fall down, I couldn't help but feel bad but also laugh because it's cute for some reason. I just want to squish their cheeks! So cuuuute!!
What else? I notice that the people of Wien. ..are they called Wieners? Just as how people of Hamburg are called Hamburgers. hahaha wow I love being random. Anyway, what was I saying or writing? Ah yes, I notice Wieners (HA!) are on the go and seems like they're in a rush. Also, when riding the metro, most of the people are standing up and they're not even fighting for seats. I swear I remember people fighting for seats in the metro wherever I went to last year.
Hmm...I suppose that it doesn't feel like I'm in Europe. Yes, I hear foreign languages and see them in print but I guess it's like no big deal for me. I've been tin Europe before so it's like not too different for me even though I haven't visited these cities and countries before. I don't know if I'm "excited." Of course, I love it here (in Europe) but... I don't know how to explain it. Well, I'm just enjoying every minute and moment here. That's all I guess.
