10/28 Back in the USA Well nothing intervened to keep us in SE Asia so we are home and a bit jet lagged. Will be trying to organize and upload some pictures and finish the Myanmar stuff soon.

Headed to the border in Chiang Khong

Chiang Khong, border town to Laos and Huay Xai

Well we decided to take a minivan bus for the six hour journey to Chiang Khong, the border town between Thailand and Laos. The last bit of road between Chiang Rai and Chiang Khong was very pretty with bright green rice paddies and jungle everywhere. The minivan dropped us off at their really marginal looking bungalows (what can you expect for $2.00?) and a Norwegian couple and we convinced them to take us to their reportedly more upscale hotel, the Namkhong Riverside Hotel.

This place ended up being fine, right on the banks of the Mekong River.  We wandered around Chiang Khong before having dinner at a hilarious little restaurant playing really bad dentist office music (luckily the beer was fine). Tomorrow, we are off to Laos - not yet sure if we have to spend the night in Huay Xai across the Mekong or if we can catch a bus to Luang Nam Tha.
