RELIGION TODAY IN CHINA

Ministry in China is unique because of the People's Republic of China government.  Communists have traditionally viewed religions with suspicion: If you have to believe in anything, why not believe in the Party?

Religion in China is going through a remarkable transition.  Officially, China is a secular state; however, the government sanctions five religions:

     Buddhism

     Catholic Christianity

     Confucianism

     Protestant Christianity

     Taoism (also known as Daoism)

CHRISTIANITY TODAY IN CHINA

It’s necessary to stress that situations in China vary greatly.

Everyone pitches in and helps
Many Communists fear the explosion in Christianity.  However, some churches are starting to see a difference in
China’s attitude.  According to Christianity Today, a Three Self pastor in Wuhan told St. Michael’s congregation, “It used to be in this city that the Religious Affairs Bureau would say ‘one more Christian, one less Chinese’, but now they say ‘one more Christian, one less criminal’.”

Despite relentless oppression (some say because of it), “underground” churches continue to flourish.  Accurate numbers are impossible to site; however, estimates of unregistered believers range from 80 million to 100+ million.  The crackdown on the Falun Gong has resulted in increased pressure on “illegal” Christians.  Yet, many continue to refuse to register.  House Christians often feel they can’t trust the government.  They remember when church registrations were followed by massive arrests.  Suffering aside, their central reason for remaining independent is the strongly-held belief that Christ is the Head of the Church " and this position cannot be usurped by a secular power.

Do not fear; God is moving in China!  The situation is vastly improved from decades ago.  Yes, lack of religious freedom is in certain places is real.  Yes, there is continued conflict between Three Self and House churches.  However, God is using believers in both groups to reach China for Jesus.  Christianity is growing at an amazing rate.  Even by conservative estimates, the Chinese Church must be considered one of the most victorious in the world.

Churches don’t save, governments don’t save, only Jesus Christ saves.  We serve a great God who has shown that He can do great things in people’s hearts, despite the intentions of others.

The future of the BaXiang church
Let us pray that God will continue to advance the Chinese revival by the power of His Holy Spirit.
