BEGIN BUILDING IN BAXIANG

We finally began constructing a church :-D The town of BaXiang is located in a hilly region of Southeast China between the Mei and Han rivers. The two closest cities of size are the ancient towns of Meizhou (also known as Meixian) to the north and Chaozhou to the southeast (near Shantou).

The hill country has missed out on the prosperity of Guangdong’s seaports and the transformation occurring in other parts of China. The majority of these people are Hakka. Hakkas are a Han sub-group that originated in the Yangzi basin of northern China during the 3rd century.

Ever dislodged by war and revolution, the Hakka migrated south in the 13th century to escape Mongolian invaders.  Unfortunately, they were mistreated and moved around southern China. 19th century Europeans called Hakkas “China’s gypsies”. They often ended up with the worst farming land on the highest ground.

OUR NEW FRIENDS

Our team members have helped build churches in many different places on six continents. Every one of us came away from our adventures in Guangdong believing that the Hakka are among the friendliest and most hospitable folks in the world. They are an officially recognized minority by the Chinese government also known as the Kejia or “guest people”. Their long exile and continued sense of being forgotten “guests” usually make them leery of “outsiders”. However, they welcomed us with open arms and we quickly became fast friends.

kumikob says:
Your story is very inspiring, and I was deeply touched to see the bright smiles of children and the villagers. Please continue God's work and I pray for your team's safety and health.
