Town of Coca-Cola worshippers
We got a minibus to San Juan Chemula based on the idea that Sundays are a great market day, the church is amazing and the locals drink Coke as a kind of ridding-of-evil-spirits ritual (no really). On arrival, we realised the market was not really one for tourists looking to buy stuff that will one day end up in the loft or in a car boot sale (I hold my hands up, thats us), the market was for locals looking to buy fruit and veg, meat covered in flies, and sheep wool to make the traditional outfits from.
Then there was the drinking away the evil spirits with Coke people. Well, Coke seems to have been replaced with beer and at 11am, there were a lot of locals passed out on the streets, slumped on benches and lying on the floor of the plaza in an alcoholic coma kind of way. We even spotted a little boy who was about 10 slurping from a beer bottle. We did see some people huddled in small groups, one holding a bottle of Coke and looking as if they were chanting something, but it seems that some people have taken on the lets-get-pissed approach to ridding themselves of evilness.
The church was indeed very pretty though.
