After an absolute mammoth day of driving, we arrived in Mataranka and stopped at the campsite that lured us with its short path leading to some natural srings to swim in.
The campsite was a bit on the rustic side, with not many facilities although there is a really good open air bar and restaurant. The bathrooms are basically open to nature and seem to be home to 100 million insects and guaranteed frogs in the loos and showers. But all good fun. There were only a few other people staying at the site and as we headed across the campsite to the hot springs path, a kangaroo hopped along near us. We stopped and watched him, commenting on how cute he was, that was until he started hopping towards us with a determined look in his eye. A bit of a panicky moment as I imagined this kangaroo was in fact murderous but he lost interest in us and hopped off.
We walked though rainforest along a board walk until we came across the natural springs and jumped in. It was so refreshing and felt very clean and clear. Lovely to get in and not have any croc warning signs to be put off by. Can't help but think about it though...
That night in the camper, we peered from behind the curtain and watched several wallaroos and a kangaroo or 2 hop about and eating in the area around our camper. The campsite light gave off enough light for us to watch them, we felt like we were on a nature programme. It was brilliant to watch them so close!
